Abstract Can hot water freeze faster than cold water? The obvious answer seems to be no, because the hot water will have to cool down and then freeze, while the cold water just needs to freeze. The name of the effect that occurs when hot water does freeze faster is called the Mpemba effect. Some questions that will be answered are: is the Mpemba effect always observed? And what are some of the mechanisms that have been proposed to explain the Mpemba effect?
