Abstract The purpose of this project is to understand how compounds found in tobacco cause cancer. The experiment exposes Serratia Marcescens bacteria to tobacco compounds to determine their effect on the bacteria's DNA. The results show that compounds found in tobacco cause mutations in the Serratia Marcescens' DNA. Research has shown that chemicals found in cigarettes cause cancer by mutating human DNA. Thus, these results can be used to demonstrate the effect smoking has on human DNA.
