Abstract The purpose of this project was to determine what the best method is to make fabric flame resistant. Pieces of fabric were cut and applied with either liquid fabric softener, a borax and boric acid mixture, or with no treatment and were set on fire. The amount of time taken for the whole piece of fabric to burn was recorded. The borax-treated fabric would not burn even covered in butane because the flame would extinguish when taken away, and the fabric softener-treated fabric had nearly the same burning rate as the fabric with no treatment. In conclusion, a mixture of borax and boric acid is the best way to easily fireproof fabric.
