Abstract The purpose of this study was to develop an assistive cane, equipped with novel SONAR technology, to aid people facing a loss of visual acuity or impairment in the performance of daily activities. Ultrasonic transducers transmit sound waves of high frequency, determining distance of nearby obstacles and producing a vibration output upon hazard identification. Users are provided with continual feedback and translation of sensory information.
