Abstract Search-and-rescue teams frequently locate survivors who are unreachable due to an inability to navigate the environment. International USAR reports identify hazards that require manipulation, such as broken electrical lines or debris covering survivors. Standard vehicles equipped with robotic arms are often too bulky for tight spaces. We propose a modular, self-constructing robotic arm that moves as separate small vehicles, then assembles for manipulation tasks.
